PERIODONTAL SCALING & ROOT PLANING

Periodontal scaling and root planing are dental procedures to treat gum disease. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces, including below the gumline, using instruments like scalers or ultrasonic devices. Root planing smoothens tooth root surfaces to prevent bacterial reattachment, promoting gum healing. These nonsurgical treatments aim to eliminate factors causing gum inflammation, combatting conditions like gingivitis or periodontitis.

Dr. Pastagia often combines Laser Therapy with scaling and root planning to help further reduce bacteria. Oral antibiotics can be prescribed at a low dose for longer-term use, or as a short-term medication to deter bacteria from re-colonizing in patients with generalized inflammation.

Scaling and root planing, along with proper oral hygiene, help manage gum disease, preventing its progression and maintaining optimal oral health.
